Why Sign Language?

Sign language is the natural, visual, gestural language of people who are deaf. Recent research over the last ten years has demonstrated the enormous benefits of teaching sign language to hearing children. These benefits include improved reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills (Daniels, 2001). Saying and signing words together is a multi-sensory teaching strategy. It engages all of a child's learning systems- visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile so that speech, language, and literacy skills are improved.

Indeed, there are many different signed languages throughout the world such as German Sign Language, Chinese Sign Language, Spanish Sign Language, just to name a few. Signs2Peace.org is based in America so the signs that we offer are based on American Sign Language (ASL). We hope to include more sign languages in the future.

We are very grateful to the Deaf community for sharing the gift of sign language with the hearing world. Remember, "The road to peace is easy to find when you follow the signs."

The Signs

We chose the signs based upon ancient teachings of the Holy Spirit. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law." Galatians 5:22-23

The writer of this passage was a man named Paul, who for a period of his life, made some very poor choices that hurt many people. However, Paul had a very powerful and amazing encounter with Jesus Christ one day while walking down a road that changed his life for good and forever.

Paul was a very talented writer and he decided to share this good news with others, even you and me. Even though Paul faced many, many challenges and hardships in his new life, he never gave up.

Throughout the history of the world, there have been many travelers on the road to peace, each representing their own faith tradition. From Mahatma Gandhi to Mother Teresa, we learn what it means to be a peacemaker and how to make a difference in the world.
